HOW HEALTHY IS YOUR INDOOR AIR?

IMPROVE YOUR AIR QUALITY

Most home heating and cooling systems, including forced air heating systems, do not mechanically bring fresh air into the house. Opening windows and doors, operating window or attic fans, when the weather permits, or running a window air conditioner with the vent control open increases the outdoor ventilation rate. Local bathroom or kitchen fans that exhaust outdoors remove contaminants directly from the room where the fan is located and also increase the outdoor air ventilation rate. It is particularly important to take as many of these steps as possible while you are involved in short-term activities that can generate high levels of pollutants — for example, painting, paint stripping, heating with kerosene heaters, cooking, or engaging in maintenance and hobby activities such as welding, soldering, or sanding. You might also choose to do some of these activities outdoors, if you can and if weather permits. Source: EPA.gov

IMPROVE COOLING SYSTEMS EFFICIENCY

The average household spends more than $2,200 a year on energy bills, with nearly half of this going to heating and cooling costs. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) can help you make smart decisions about your home’s heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system that can help save on energy costs, improve your overall comfort at home, and help fight global warming.

REDUCE ALLERGENS

Indoor allergens such as dust mites, pet dander, mold, and cockroach droppings can trigger allergy and asthma symptoms in millions of allergy sufferers. In fact, a survey published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology found that at least six allergens were detectable in more than more than 50 percent of homes. Carried in through the air, allergens can be found on furniture, floors, and other surfaces around the house. While no home can be completely allergen-free, thorough cleaning on a regular basis can help reduce the number of allergens to which you’re exposed. Try these 10 tips for minimizing indoor allergens, and breathe easier from now on.

PREVENT FIRE HAZARDS

The increase of dust, lint, dirt, and other debris in the air ducts and dryer vents can cause a serious fire hazard. This especially creates a dangerous fire hazard when the dust, dirt and other debris get into the blower motor. It can clog the vent, preventing heat from escaping the dryer system. Clogged dryer vents can cause a serious fire hazard. Proper cleaning of the dryer vent can help protect home from vent fire hazards. You may consider having your air ducts cleaned simply because it seems logical that air ducts will get dirty over time and should be occasionally cleaned.
